In line with these goals, Calik continues to support R&D, system development and product improvement studies which contribute to the determination of the environmental impacts of their activities and management of the risks.

Calik sets an example for the textile industry with its pioneering practices in environmental sustainability also exhibiting its competence in this area with the international certifications it has received.

Resource Management

Calik Denim follows the “clean production plan performance” application prepared in line with the corporate resource management plan with an annual development report.

Good Practice | Water Resource Protection

Lowering water consumption

By making efforts to reduce the amount of water used, 377,666 m3 of water has been saved annually compared to 2015.

Decontamination of water resources
Through chemical recovery of paint, the pollution load rate in the waste water has been reduced by 5.7%.

Good Practice | The Protection of Air and Soil

Reduction of greenhouse gas emission levels

A greenhouse gas emission monitoring plan was prepared and approved by the ministry in 2015. Validation and monitoring. Validation studies are continuing within the scope of the monitoring plan.

Prevention of soil pollution

Hazardous wastes and industrial waste waters that could harm the soil have been reduced to less than the limit values in soil pollution.

Reduction of emission levels

Emission values have been reduced by about 3% with improvements made.

Also some 15 thousand root trees were planted to create a memorial forest.

Good Practice | Waste Management

Increase in recycling rates

According to the protection of the environment and waste management, wastes from  materials used as production inputs are delivered to licensed companies. The recycling of packaging waste put on the market was recovered by 52.8% with an improvement of 10.8%.

Recovery of paint and caustic

18.150 kg of caustic was recovered in the context of re-use of alkaline wastewater in other pre-treatments. Improvements made have recovered 24,500 kg of paint.

Good Practice | Use of Raw Materials

Use of organic cotton

Organic Cotton is produced without using toxic substances such as insecticides, chemical fertilizers from genetically unaffected plants. Calik Denim has started to use organic cotton in its production since 2007 and the usage rate of organic cotton in 2016 has increased by 32,9% compared to the year 2015.

Use of recycled raw materials

Calik Denim supports sustainability in the use of recycled raw materials by adopting environmentally friendly raw materials such as recycled cotton and recycled polyester in denim fabric production.

Support on Good Agricultural Practice

Calik Denim became a member of BCI in 2013. The rate of good cotton use in 2016 has increased by 36.3% compared to 2015.

Energy & Energy Productivity

Calik Denim applies environmentally sensitive production methods developed by an R & D team for a safe and healthy future. In line with the ISO 50001 Energy Management System established in 2015, the company can clearly follow its energy applications taking place in the plant.

Thanks to the Energy Management System, improvements in energy performance, efficiency and consumption can be made continuously and successfully. Energy managers within the company constantly evaluate the actual energy levels in line with the principle of maximum production with less energy.

Good Practice | Energy Productivity

With energy efficiency studies, electricity savings of 30% compared to 2015 have been achieved.

Reducing Fuel Consumption

With the renewal of the boiler, 1000 m3 / day of natural gas was saved. 44% electricity savings were achieved with the revision made in the weaving facilities.

Energy Insulation

High energy efficiency motors and also an online tracking system have been installed in order to increase energy production and monitor the energy usage levels.

Equity Studies

Energy recovery from waste and resource saving activities are carried out.

Emission & Waste Management

The integrated production plant in Malatya contains two types of carbon emission sources as well as physical, chemical, biological and sludge treatment units. Calik Denim shows great sensitivity to carbon emissions. In this direction, as of 2015, the emission values of flue gas are being monitored in accordance with the online measurement regulations within the scope of the Continuous Emission Measurement System (SEÖS).

Emphasis is placed on correct management of waste from company activities and zero environmental damage. All wastes are collected separately from their sources in the facilities which are managed with Recycle and Ekoteks certificates. Hazardous wastes are delivered to licensed disposal companies and other wastes to recycling companies. In addition, successful projects are being carried out on waste and used water.

Good Practice | Projects sensitive to Natural Balance

Calik Denim simply treats natural resources in the most efficient way in both administrative and production processes.

For this purpose,

  • Waste heat recovery in drying machines,
  • Reducing the amount of salt used in water softening system,
  • Coal boiler waste flue gas recovery economizer,
  • Saving applications in lighting,
  • Caustic recovery,
  • Indigo paint recovery,
  • Trainings on environment and water saving,
  • Separate collection and recovery of office paper,
  • Recycling machine oils and vegetable waste oils,
  • Many responsive projects such as the cancellation of the charcoal filter bags have been prepared and carried out.

Good Practice | Eco-friendly  Production Technologies from the R&D Center

Calik Denim applies environmentally sensitive production methods developed by R&D team for a safe and healthy future. With the “Eco-save” production method developed at Çalık Denim’s R & D Center, water use was reduced by an average of 65% and waste amount by 70%. Calik Denim can produce organic (OCS) fabrics from 5% to 95% with 100% organic fabric production (GOTS).

With the Better Cotton (BCI) membership in 2014, the company is increasingly using resources to support environmental, economic and social sustainability in its cotton supply. The Bluesign certificate, which Calik received in 2015, proves the company’s ability to apply environmental and occupational health by international standards.

Some of Calik Denim products which are developed for the protection of nature and human health are:

  • Denim fabrics produced from recycled cotton,
  • Denim fabrics produced from recycled polyester,
  • “Paper Denim” fabrics produced by converting waste paper into yarn,
  • Denim / gabardine fabrics developed from raw materials (crailar flax, linen, etc.) produced with less resource use,
  • Denim / gabardine fabrics using organic materials and BCI,
  • Denim / gabardine fabrics developed with zero emission, zero chemical use,
  • Denim / gabardine fabrics using completely natural raw materials
